St. Georgen Bräu Kellerbier is the signature brew of the Modschiedler
Brewing Company, a venerable craft brewery in the small Franconian
town of Buttenheim, some 10 miles south of Bamberg. The brewery was
founded in 1624, in the middle of the Thirty Years War (1616 - 1648),
at which time Buttenheim was overrun by the Swedish army several times. The Modschiedler brewery was the first in the region and it has
been family-run ever since.

Kellerbier, literally “cellar beer,” is an ancient amber lager beer style that is indigenous to the region of Franconia. In the old days, Kellerbier, after it finished fermenting, was always cask-conditioned for several months in cool caves and cellars in and around the Since 1624 village. Today, the same slow-ripening process takes place in temperaturecontrolled
stainless steel tanks instead.

Unlike the other Franconian beer style, the assertive, smoked, dark Rauchbier from Bamberg, just a few minutes up the Autobahn, the slowly maturated Kellerbier has an exceptionally mellow flavor. It has always been dispensed straight from the ungespundete (literally “unbunged”) cask by gravity. Thus it is an unfiltered, relatively low-effervescent, mellow brew of great drinkability.

One of the best ways to enjoy a St. Georgen Bräu Kellerbier is under shady chestnut trees on a lazy summer afternoon in the brewery’s beer garden.

For the United States, the Kellerbier is filled unfiltered in slender 11.2-oz. bottles and transported via a seamless Cold Track® for maximum freshness from the brewery cooler to our climate-controlled warehouses here in the New World.
